Woh dushman-e-jaan, jaan se pyara bhi kabhi tha

Woh dushman-e-jaan, jaan se pyara bhi kabhi tha
Ab kiss se kahen koi hamara bhi kabhi tha

Utra hai rag-o-pey* main to dil katt sa geya hai
Yeh zeher-e-judaayi ke gawaara bhi kabhi tha

Har dost jahan abar-e-gurezaan ki tarah hai
Yeh sheher kabhi sheher hamara bhi kabhi tha

Titlii ke taaqub* mein koi phool sa bacha
Aesa hi koi khawb hamara bhi kabhi tha

Ab agley zamaney ke milain log to poochain
Jo haal hamara hai, tumhara bhi kabhi tha

Har bazm main hum ne usey afsurdaa hi dekha
Kehtey hain Faraz anjuman-e-araa* bhi kabhi tha

Woh dushman-e-jaan, jaan se pyara bhi kabhi tha,

Woh dushman-e-jaan, jaan se pyara bhi kabhi tha,
Ab kiss se kahen koi hamara bhi kabhi tha,
Utra hai rag-o-pey main to dil katt sa geya hai,
Yeh zeher-e-judaayi ke gawaara bhi kabhi tha,
Har dost jahan abar-e-gurezaan ki tarah hai,
Yeh sheher kabhi sheher hamara bhi kabhi tha,
