Aaj mera janam din tha,

Aaj mera janam din tha,
Main intizar karta raha,
Din se raat ho gayi,
Aur main chalta raha,
Barish mere badan ko bhigoti rahi,
Aur tann andar hi andar jalta raha,
Magar mein chalta raha,
Intizar karta raha,
Ke shayed…
Kahin se koi jaani pehchani si awaz,
Mujhe pyar se bulaa kar kahe,
Janam din mubarak ho…
Magar aaj to har taraf balaa ka sanaata hai,
Puri basti ne mere janam ke saug mein,
Apne apne gharon mein chiragha’n nahin kiya,
Har taraf holnaak andhera tha,
Is andhere mein,
Barish ka shor,
Pato’n ki khar’kharahat,
Hawaa ki siskiyaan,
Aur bijli ki chamak ne,
Mahol ajeeb daraawna sa bana diya tha,
Mera dil ghabraa gaya,
Subah ka bhoola tha is liye,
Shaam ko ghar aagaya,
Kya dekhta hoon ke ghar ki dehleez par hamesha ki tarah,
Woh chiraag liye meri muntzir thi,
Us ne aa kar mujhe sahara diya,
Phir apne naazuk bazu’on mein samait kar,
Mujhe mere bistar tak le gayi,
Mera sar apni gaud mein rakh kar,
Mere baalon mein ungliyan pher kar mujhe sulaney lagi,
Phir dheere dheere mere kaan mein gunguney lagi,
Janam din mubarak ho,
Janam din mubarak ho,
Dunya walon se kitni achi thi,
Meri tanhai,
Meri udaasi,
Meri veerani,
Meri mehbooba…
